Thermal Expansion of Hybrid Chiral Mechanical Metamaterial with Patterned Bi‐Strips

Hybrid chiral mechanical metamaterials with center squares connecting by bi-layer Strips (Bi-Strips) patterned interfaces are designed and fabricated via multi-material 3D printing. Due to the thermal mismatch between bi-strips chirality-induced rotation, designs will undergo either expansion or shrinkage under constant temperature increase, resulting in widely tuned overall coefficients (CTEs) for metamaterials. Analytical models of both arbitrary dissimilar interface morphology change developed predict curvature CTEs designs. Two design regions opposite trends were observed explored. The verified systematic finite element (FE) simulations experiments on printed specimens. This investigation enlarges space achieving desired a wide range. article is protected copyright.
